A mother’s journey: “Loves for Lily Ruth”

Many days stand out in a person’s mind—their first day of college or a new job, the day they said “I do”, or the day their child was born-just to name a few. A day that will be stamped into my internal calendar for years to come is August 31, 2017. That day, my husband Nick and I received the news that our second child was a girl! We were ecstatic, but other news was also delivered. I was told that the blood test that had been performed on me had also indicated that our daughter was at high risk for Down syndrome.

The next two months were full of doctor’s appointments in Dallas and a roller coaster of “she does have it” and “she doesn’t have it”. After discovering that our daughter, Lillian “Lily” Ruth, also had a heart defect called an AV canal defect, my husband and I decided to have a test called an amniocentesis performed to know for sure. We wanted what was best for our daughter and to be prepared for her entrance into this world. We wanted the most skilled team of doctors to be surrounding her the moment she arrived.
