Heavy black smoke filled the skies during the afternoon of May 31 as a fire burned at an abandoned egg plant
Two engines, a brush unit and eight firefighters responded to a fire at the old Texas Egg facility on County Road 1140, six miles southeast of Pittsburg.
According to their Facebook post, Pittsburg Fire-Rescue reported they received a call about 2:50 p.m. of a possible explosion and fire in the area of the Enbridge plant.
Three buildings were fully engulfed as fireman arrived. Fire Chief David Abernathy said the buildings were in various stages of disrepair and most have been “scrapped out” with only the metal exteriors remaining.
“The fire moved rapidly,” Abernathy said. “The buildings were a total loss.”
Abernathy said he believes the blaze could have been caused from embers from a nearby brush fire.
“An ember could have been caught by the wind and pushed inside an opening in the old building,” said Abernathy. “There was lots of wood exposed inside with leaves and trash.”
He added that the cause of the fire has not yet been determined by insurance investigators.
There were no injuries reported and the buildings did not have utilities.
