Hackett is ‘spicing things up’ in PISD

Pittsburg Independent School District recently hired a new food service director in Chris Hackett, who has already started to spice things up a bit in the kitchens across the district.
Hackett has 31 years of experience and worked her way through the ranks.
“I really love what I do and I’m really excited…I’m taking it as a challenge. There are a couple things that I do want to change. I’ve been delayed though, because we had an administrative review in October so that took up a lot of my time, so it wasn’t until November that I started changing the menus,” said Hackett.
The administrative review, carried out by the Texas Department of Agriculture, is an extensive 12-week review process in which inspectors walk through facilities, view guidelines, and the like.
In the past, parents, students, and others have gone to the PISD website to access menus. And, while they can still do that, it’s no longer in the same place. Menus are now located on the district website under “Our District” and can be accessed by clicking the “Child Nutrition Program” tab.
“We want to put more on that site eventually; all we have now is our wellness policy and the menus. We’ve talked about adding pictures and different things that would be informative to parents and students,” said Hackett.
Most remember cafeteria meals as being bland, boring and the same every week; not so at PISD. Hackett said right now, she has about a five-week menu cycle and not every week is the same.
