Her legacy should be generosity
She was one of the many hostesses I aspired to be during my younger years in Pittsburg. I met her and came to know her through extremely sad circumstances. Her only son had leukemia and was ghting for his life and I had become involved with the American Cancer Society. It began in the 1980s. A tall brunette walked in the o ce and I was working in “news” at the time. Her name was Tina and she was looking for someone in the community who would organize a local American Cancer Society board of directors. e only thing I knew about the American Cancer Society was that it existed, so she spent quite a bit of time with me that day explaining “the largest voluntary health organization in the United States, committed to saving lives and nishing the ght against cancer.” And before I knew it, I had accepted the position of president of the board. Over the next few months, the board decided to have an elaborate, dress up a air with beautiful flowers and elegant food.
