Determined to help children with their writing skills, the fourth grade teachers of the Pittsburg Independent School District have initiated a program called, “Red Carpet Writers, the Plan….” Fourth graders will be challenged to write rough drafts on subjects and then final drafts using the same prompt. The “Red Carpet Writers” best compositions from each class will be announced on Fridays. Also the best manuscripts will be placed on awriting bulletin board (which ismobile) for students, staff members and the community to “enjoy the winning” compositions. The bulletin board will make the rounds at some of the following businesses: Brookshire’s, Pilgrim Bank and Guaranty Bank and Trust. All “Red Carpet Writers” will be recognized in The Pittsburg Gazette in March. “Mary Ruth Townsend asked me if we would support such a program, giving the children recognition and let readers know what is going on in fourth grade. We certainly want to encourage and support these youngsters in not only writing but reading the compositions as well. It’s hard to find good writers these days and I’m very impressed PISD is launching this program to help students with reading and writing,” saidDebbie Knox, publisher of The Pittsburg Gazette. “It will also help them with the spring testing.” Rewards for winners also include 20 extra minutes of recess on Fridays.
