Pitt Elite track team going to state

Now in its second year, the Pitt Elite summer league track club has qualified to attend a state tournament to be held July 30-Aug. 3 in College Station. Head coach Troy Lafayette and assistant coach Nina Andrews couldn’t be prouder of the 19-member team, 11 of whom are going to be competing in the tournament.

“They’ve been working hard all year,” Mr. Lafayette said. “I have a couple athletes that came out late, but they worked hard, put in the effort and made it to state.”

Eight players from Pittsburg, two from Carthage and one from Daingerfield will be competing in College Station. Pitt Elite is a member of the U.S. Track and Field club and the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation. The team is not sanctioned by the University Interscholastic League because it’s a summer league.

Registration is open to boys and girls ages 6 to 18, but currently the club only has members age 12 and up. “Lots of people don’t know about the track club,” Mr. Lafayette said. “I wanted to try to get the kids something to do during the summer to help them stay out of trouble and stay in shape for the upcoming year.”

Mr. Lafayette said he always loved competing in track while he was in school and his daughters now compete on the Pitt Elite team, as well.

“We’re trying to get more kids involved from Daingerfield, Naples, Gilmer and Mount Pleasant because we’re the only summer team close,” he said. “We want to give them all a way to become friends with athletes they may be competing against in the upcoming years of high school.”

Everyone on the team does their best, Mr. Lafayette said, but some members have gone the extra mile to improve themselves on the track.
