I might have hit the big 6-0 this year but there are some things I still remember like yesterday’s child. And one thing stands out clear in my mind: Alittle physical punishment never hurt me or any other child. After my trip to Walmart the other day, I can see not everyone feels that way.
My friend Mollye and I were reminiscing the other day and she told me something I couldn’t believe. Mollye was actually switched as a young child and I thought Mollye led a privileged life – free from physical punishment. She told me her mother got so mad at her one time; she chased her around a table full of women playing bridge. Then Mollye told me she rubbed her whelps really hard to keep them red until her dad came home where he would feel sorry for her. Now that - I can believe.
Does everyone in the world think their mother is the meanest woman in the world? My mother had a soft voice and was very even tempered but I was very scared of making her mad because she loved switches and flyswatters. And on occasion she would pinch me as hard as she could.
Church was always a place of reverence and my sister and I were expected to go to church and sit still and not say a word. I tried very hard to comply with the rules because my mother didn’t play at church. And I found out just how much she didn’t play one Sunday after I asked a friend to sit with us.
