Couples celebrate more than graduation

Graduation is closing in on the Class of 2014, and I sincerely hope this group of teenagers has created memories that will last them a lifetime. My momma always said, “Enjoy your senior year in high school because those are the best days of your life.” I definitely believe in those words because I can remember so many moments from that year. Sooner than they realize, this year’s graduating class will be planning their 10 year reunion and will wonder where the time went. I graduated with the Pittsburg High School Class of 1968, and every 10 years we get together and share special memories of the 12 years most of us spent together. However, one graduating class is different from all the other classes that have passed through the hallowed halls of PHS.

The Class of 1964 will soon celebrate its 50th class reunion on June 6 and 7. Wow! I can remember sitting in the stands at my last homecoming game in 1968 at the old football stadium and watching the Class of 1918 slowly climb those wooden bleachers as they celebrated their 50th class reunion. I was thinking“ Holy cow! 1918! WWI ended in 1918!” I wonder what the Class of 2014 would think if they saw the Class of 1964 climbing the bleachers at Pirate Stadium? Those young whippersnappers would probably think the same as us, but their slang would be different.“ Swag! The Class of 1964! YOLO!” The 2014 class would definitely see some gray hair and balding pates, but most of the ’64 attendees could probably still skip up the bleachers!

There is one thing about the Class of 1964 that few people would notice, and that is long-lasting love. Not love between the approximate 56 students who graduated, but the real, “forever and ever…Amen” love. Five couples from the Class of 1964 share a special, unbreakable bond. Carol Polson and Larry Shelton, Judy Looney and Johnny Peterson, Mary Cotner and Larry Shrum, JoAnne Seale and David Frye, Jackie Thornton and Tommy Irby fell in love and married. I have said this before, and I will say it one more time. I love hearing about romances, and these five couples were willing to share their romance stories with me.
