High school students place at scholastic meet

Pittsburg High School’s University Interscholastic League’s academic team opened the year by participating in the Mount Pleasant Tiger Winter Invitational in January.
In the current events team competition, Pittsburg placed first as a team, with Charles Walker taking fourth and Jeremiah Jones fifth individually. Other team members are Wynter Fielder and Daniel Yanez.
Pittsburg’s journalism team got second overall and won a total of eight individual medals. Emma Lee won first in both news writing and editorial writing, and she placed second in features. Ro Burns placed second in headlines and sixth in news writing. Andres Matiz took fourth in editorials and sixth in headlines, and Blanca Alvarez received fifth in headlines.
In speech, Pittsburg won four medals. Blanca placed first and Charles Walker second in informative speaking. Ro placed third and Jocelyne Flores sixth in persuasive speaking.
Also in spelling, Wynter was first and Charles third for two more Pittsburg medals.
The PHS UIL Academic Team also participated in the Gilmer Buckeye Invitational on Feb. 2.
The current events team took first place overall. Individually, Wynter placed second, Andres third, Charles fourth and Jeremiah fifth.
PHS’s Journalism Team came in second as a team and earned 10 of the 24 places that were awarded. Emma received three medals, taking second in editorial writing and third in news writing and feature writing. Terra Eagan also placed in three events, third in headlines, fourth in feature writing and sixth in editorials, while Andres got fifth in both news writing and headlines. Daniel came in fifth in feature writing, and Blanca placed sixth in headlines.
In spelling, Wynter placed second for Pittsburg.
The next meet for the PHS team will be in Sulphur Springs.
