Pirates soccer dominates Atlanta, basketball falls

The Pirates soccer squad picked up a one-sided victory over Atlanta to open district play Thursday as they won 10-0.
Six different Pirates scored in the win as Victor Ponce finished with a hat trick and Daniel Silva and Jorge Becceril each scored two goals.
Goal keeper Huber Cortez had a shutout in the opening half of the contest while Joseph Guitierez held the Rabbits scoreless in the second half.
The Pirates led 5-0 at the half on goals by Ponce, Silva, Mario Perez and Jonathon Ramirez. Pittsburg added five more goals in the second half as Ponce, Oscar Cisneros, Becceril and Alex Mata scored.
Silva, Ramirez and Alex Mata all had assists in the win.
The Pirate basketball season came to a close with a heartbreaking loss at home last Monday.
The Pirates erased a 20-point deficit with six minutes to play but could not complete the comeback in overtime as they fell to visiting Atlanta, 72-59.
A close game through the opening quarter, the Rabbits used an 18-6 second-quarter run to build a 34-21 lead the half. Pittsburg trailed by 20 with just under six minutes to go but came back to tie the contest at 59 at the end of regulation. Out of steam, the Pirates were outscored 13-0 in the overtime period.
Sir Charles Perkins led the Pirates with 19 points in the loss while Justin Zepeda and Levi Leonard each scored 16, Jakevion Traylor scored 12 and D.J. Porter scored two points.
