GILMER --  Health, Wellness, and Safety are the focus of the Upshur County Free Health Fair scheduled for Saturday, March 5. The fair, sponsored by the Gilmer Area Chamber of Commerce, is set for 8:30-11:30 a.m. at the Gilmer Civic Center.
Trinity Mother Frances will provide blood pressure checks, screenings and diabetic counseling. In addition, the Gilmer Lions Club will perform vision tests. More than 40 vendors are expected to attend promoting health, wellness and safety for all ages. Participants will address dental care for adults and children, orthodontist information, special needs assistance, a variety of elder care services, health/nutrition education and youth development, health insurance and personal safety.
Enrollment will also be held for the Children’s Health Insurance Program. In addition, the Trinity Mother Frances “Mammomobile” will be present to provide free mammograms, but an advance appointment is required by calling 903-843-4019. Carter BloodCare of Tyler will also conduct a blood drive.
Also at the fair, the Hope House for Pets will be outside to host pet adoptions. Another feature of the fair is the “Amber Menefee Memorial,” a trailer containing the crashed car in which the Texas Tech student was killed by a drunk driver in 2006. The memorial, which can be seen online at ambersmobilememorial.org, is aimed at impacting audiences in a graphic way.
