Pittsburg High School junior Sydney Reynolds broke the school’s girls basketball record for three-point baskets.
Reynolds set the record by netting 92 three-pointers during the 2016-17 season. Coach Herring said that he had no idea who the record holder was, but felt confident this was a new record.
However, according to former girls basketball coach John Chatham, the previous three-point record was set in 2013 by Cheyenne Ramey with 48.
“I am very proud of Sydney and how successful she was this season behind the three-point line,” said coach Ryan Herring. “We had talked before the season had started about how she would have an opportunity to lead the state in making three-pointers this season if she could average about three per game. Typically the state leader will finish with around 110 for the season and Sydney is not far away from that. Basketball is a very skill-oriented sport and being able to make 92 three-pointers in 33 games speaks to the incredibly high skill level that Sydney possesses shooting a basketball.”
Because the state totals have not yet been submitted, it is unknown where Reynolds will be ranked. Herring said that she improved from 38 three-pointers last season to 92 this season -- a tremendous jump.
“She has put in a lot of time and effort to be great at what she does and the proof is her statistics,” Herring said. “Not only did she finish the season with 92 three-pointers, she also shot a 33-percent average in each game. That is very efficient offensively.”
