Lady Pirates close out season with 14-4A loss

The Pittsburg Lady Pirates closed out the 2016-17 season with a District 14-4A loss to the North Lamar Lady Panthers on Feb. 7.
The loss dropped the Lady Pirates to 9-24 overall and 0-10 in District 14-4A play.
It was the final game for seniors Star Smith and Teandra Duffey. Smith, a 5-foot-7 guard, paced PHS with a team-high 18 points with four rebounds and six steals, while Duffey, a 5-8 post, hauled down eight boards.
Jalynn Smith, Sydney Reynolds and Sydney Waldrep had six each, while Malaysia Burns added two in the loss.
Overall, PHS was 8-of-20 from the arch as Smith and Waldrep finished with a pair of 3-pointers each.
Smith was a four-year starter and was named “Newcomer of the Year” by district coaches her freshman season. The next season, she was selected as the district’s “Most Valuable Player.”
During her final season, Smith led the Lady Pirates in scoring, hitting 13 points per outing.
After graduation, Smith plans to attend college and major in kinesiology. She is the daughter of Keshia Smith.
Duffey lettered in basketball the past two seasons. This season she pulled down 116 rebounds while averaging four points per game.
She plans to attend college to become an obstetrics and gynecology doctor.
On the season, Star Smith led the teams in scoring with 13 points per outing and Reynolds was second at 10 per game. Reynolds shot 33 percent from the 3-point line (92-of-278).
On the glass, Burns (7.5 per game) hauled down a team-high 210, Marlisha Swain 154. Smith 138, Duffey 116 and Reynolds with 102.
The Lady Pirates shot 45 percent from the foul line. Star Smith was 83-of-14 (58 percent), while Waldrep was 60-of-120 (50 percent).
