Football season is in the air

The Pittsburg Pirates’ 2016 season is upon us. Twoa-days begin Aug. 1, Pirate Tail-gate Party is Aug 11, the Pirates first scrimmage is Aug. 12, season tickets go on sale Aug. 1 through Aug. 12, and the rst non-conference game is Aug. 28. Freshman band members meet July 27, and the full band meets July 29. The Pirate Varsity Cheerleaders also begin practice this month too. So, are we cranked yet? The UIL realignment at the end of last season put the Pirates in a newly formed district with, in the order that we play them, Atlanta - home, Spring Hill (Longview) - home, Pleasant Grove - away, Gladewater – home, and Gilmer - away. The good news is the longest driving distance for an away game is to Pleasant Grove and is just over one hour away. You can forget that crazy drive to Quinlan. Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine ranks the Pirates at number 10 in the new 4A, Division 2, top 20. Starting with number one the teams are ranked, 1. West Orange, 2. Gilmer, 3. Cuero, 4. Celina, 5. La Grange, 6. Sweetwater, 7. Bellville, 8. Atlanta, 9. Giddings, 10. Pittsburg, to wrap up the top ten. Then there is Gladewater at number 14 and Pleasant Grove at number 20.
