Pirates’ football boot camp builds character

Football boot camp is Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Brad Baca’s way a preparing the team for the coming season by a series of group meetings, partially con dence builders, and motivational lectures. It includes weight training, mat drills, logs drill and at the end of each day, a at out quarter mile, the “Gut Quarter.” For the 63 young men who are in the Pirate boot camp this is not “Spring Training” that’s something else entirely. at comes a er this phase called spring ball, with no pads or helmets, just drills with the football, passing and running. “ e true purpose of the boot camp is to help the kids to understand and demonstrate the true meaning of 100 percent e ort. Learning 100 percent e ort is 100 percent concentration, and 100 percent intensity,” Coach Baca said. Coach Baca instituted the boot camp last year and with a win 10 and lose only two in the 2015 season, the boot camp process works. When asked if this was sort of a buy-in for the individual Coach Baca responded.
