The Alamo - continued

Early in the nineteenth century the Mission San Antonio de Valero, became known as the Alamo because of a large stand of cottonwood trees near the complex. The Mexican Army occupied the mission until Dec. 1835. When General Martín Perfecto de Cos surrendered to Texian forces. Most Texians believed the war was over since as far as they knew, all the Mexican troops had left Texas with Gen. Cos. It was a mistake, when Gen. Cos got to the border he was met by another Mexican army division heading north. This division was under the command of the Dictator and President of Mexico and Commanding General of all Mexican forces, Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna.
