Pittsburg bests Chapel Hill in scrimmage

The Pittburg Pirates and Chapel Hill Bulldogs scrimmaged in a preseason match up that was not only productive for the coaches, but a morale booster for the teams.
The Pitt offense made good on their promise to score throughout the game and at the final buzzer the score had the Pirates winning 19-14. Athletic Director Brad Baca said he was extremely pleased with the varsity and told the team in an after game huddle they had met the bar the coaching staff had set.
The scrimmage began with the freshmen and Junior Varsity team match ups. The field was split with the Fish teams on the East 50 yards of the field and the JV on the west.
All four teams would run 10 offensive plays then switch for 10 defensive plays. The Pirate coaches said they were extremely pleased with the performance of the Pirate Fish and JV teams.
Next the varsity teams took the field and also followed the same scrimmage rules as earlier running 10 offensive plays then switching to defense. Then the teams took to the field and played two regulation timed quarters.
Pitt scored first, however Chapel Hill answer with 7 of their own. The Pirates rallied and scored again only to miss the field goal, now 13-7.
Early in the last quarter the Bulldogs went ahead 14-13. The teams exchanged several punts, then the Pirates began a drive that penetrated the 20 and looked like an eventual score only to fumble on about the 14.
Then one of the most amazing things happened. As the Pirate offensive players came off they were apologizing to the defense going onto the field. They also encouraged them to shut the Chapel Hill offense down and get the ball back.
The offense and the bench began to chant, ‘defense, defense.’ It was taken up by the stands. The Pitt Pirate defense did just that, they threw Chapel Hill back for loses on all of the three plays which forced a punt from the Pirate end zone.
The Varsity proved they have the attitude and can put out the effort to win, coach Baca said. The team voiced their agreement that the bar must be raised.
