PPD urges caution as kids return to school
As summer draws to a close, it is time for everyone to start thinking about school safety as kids start back to school. Below are some back to school safety tips that the Pittsburg Police Department urges residents to keep in mind.
Students should be sure to always walk on sidewalks. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic. Designated corner or crosswalks should be observed at all times. Look both ways before crossing the street and then look again.
Children should never run out in the street or cross between parked cars. Bus riders should obey the bus driver. If kids walk to school, parents need to make sure they’re using the “buddy” system.
Parents are also advised to develop a safety plan for kids. Teach your child a “safe” word if someone other than you picks them up and teach kids what a ‘safe’ stranger is, such as a mother with children or a police officer. Designate a safe house in the neighborhood and know where your children are at all times. Parents should also be monitoring children’s electronic devices, PPD Chief Penn said, so they know who their children are communicating with.
Drivers should watch for pedestrians especially in school zones. Put down the cell phones, make-up and food. Distracted driving is the second leading cause of crashes.
Only drop off children at designated drop-off points and never in the middle of the street. Leave in plenty of time and have extra patience. Wear your seatbelt and always stop for flashing school bus lights.
Chief Penn also said parents should teach kids how to deal with bullying and to always inform school staff.
As always, the public is reminded to mark valuables and record the serial numbers and report criminal or suspicious activity when it happens.
