Hammonds

Walter “Louis” Hammonds, 69, of San Anotnio, formerly of Mount Pleasant, passed away Monday, June 22, 2015. Funeral services were held June 25, 2015 at 2 p.m. in the sanctuary of Gladewater Baptist Church in the Harts Bluff community with Bro. Gib Johnson and Bro. Rickey Logan officiating. Interment followed at Gladewater Cemetery.

Mr. Hammonds graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in 1964 where he played basketball, baseball, and football. After graduation, he attended a couple of colleges in East Texas. He also played football for a club team called the Texarkana Titans. He was drafted and joined the Marines in 1966. He served in Vietnam in 1967. After his service, he went to work for Fina Oil. Then returned to Mount Pleasant, to partner with O.B. Goolsby and co-owned Tucker Pump Service. He raised his family in Mount Pleasant where they attended Gladewater Baptist Church, and later First Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant. They spend many years riding dirt bikes in Daisy, Arkansas, spending time camping, hunting, fishing and teaching his children to water ski on the lake. He also coached little league baseball with his son. He enjoyed many activities and trips with lifelong friends like hunting, fishing and snow skiing. He later went to work for TUMCO and later retired from North American Coal at the San Miguel Lignite Mine in Jourdanton, Texas. Then he began devoting all of his time to his lifelong passion, golf. He never met a stranger and was always quick with a joke or antidote.

Mr. Hammonds is survived by his partner, Jan Nugent Smith of San Antonio; his daughter, Amy Hammonds; his son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Jennifer Hammonds; grandchildren, Jake Hammonds, Ryan, Ty and his wife Kat, Abby Hammonds, Makinzie and Caleb Massey.

He is preceded in death by his parents, R. L. and Lucille Hammonds.
