Christine Frances Barton Cook passed on to be with the Lord after a brief illness at ETMC Tyler on Feb. 10. Funeral arrangements were set with Erman Smith Funeral Home in Pittsburg. Graveside services were held Saturday, Feb. 14, at 1 p.m. to honor her memory with love. Officiating was Brother Doyle Rust.
She was born Aug. 29, 1922 making her 92 years blessed with life. Her birthplace was the Ebenezer Community in Pittsburg. For years she worked as a seamstress at Mike Benet Formals, then sold used cars at her C & F Used Car Lot, after that she raised chickens for Pilgrim’s and enjoyed the farm life with cattle. The First Baptist Church of Pittsburg was her home church, and she often attended services at the Leesburg Baptist Church when her health condition changed. She was also a former member of Bethel Baptist Church.
Quilting was one of her favorite things along with making crochet doilies since December 2011 she lived near her son-in-law and daughter at Autumn Leaves Nursing and Rehab in Henderson, Texas. Many friends have been made as a resident there and in the community. For several years she played her guitar with the Silver Threads and traveled to nursing homes to perform. Her volunteer work as a Pink Lady at the Pittsburg hospital allowed her to have many pendants for years of service to others. Her love for old fashion gospel music would find her in attendance at the music singing gatherings at the nursing home. Her love of flowers and potted plants kept her window sill full at all times in her room.
She was preceded in death by husbands Ethan Brewer, D.H. Barton, A.G. Lacy, and Floyd Cook; her parents W.H. and Mattie Young; brother Billy Joe Young, brother William Young and wife Mary John, brother Herman Young and wife Melba, sister Ethel Blankenship and husband Elmer, along with step son James Curtis (Bud) Barton and wife Dorothy, step daughter Aletha (Jack) Fleming, step daughter Edith Marie (Tine) Overstreet and husband Jack, step daughter Edna Faye (Ted) Minshew and husband Howard, and step daughter-in-law Marie Barton.
She is survived by a daughter Katielee Barton Burks and husband James Paul of Henderson, step-son Raymond Barton and wife Marlene of Bakersfield, Calif., a sister-in-law Estella Young of Pittsburg, treated like a daughter Betty Jean McCaw of Como, also several dear friends that referred to her as mama, numerous step grandchildren, step great grandchildren, step great great and a few great great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were: Kevin Baker, Larry Black, Johnny Kruger, Bubba Overstreet, John Overstreet, and Perry Overstreet; Honorary Pallbearer was James Overstreet.
