Pirates end season against Hornets

The Pittsburg Pirates ended their season last Friday night, losing to the Athens Hornets 47- 27. The Pirates end their season with a 4-7 mark, going 3-2 in district play. The Pirates faced the Athens Hornets in the first round of the playoffs at Hanby Stadium in Mesquite in the region 2 bi-district championship game. After a blank first quarter, Athens started off the night with a score by way of a touchdown pass to Travon Fuller to make the score 7-0 with 11:53 left in the second quarter of play. On the Pirates next possession, they would get on the board when Offensive Coordinator, Ricky Joe Meeks, reached into his bag of tricks and dialed up a crazy play. Quarterback, Billy Kimble passed the ball outside, then the receiver threw it back to Kimble who ran into the end zone untouched. After the extra point, the score was tiedat 7-7 with 7:54 left in the second quarter. Athens then retook the lead on a rushing touchdown by standout tailback, Logan Fuller with 3:36 left in the first half to make the score 14-7.The Pirates would stall on their next drive and be forced to punt the ball back to the Hornets with a little under three minutes remaining in the first half of play. Athenswould find themselves unable to do anything and time expired on the half, with the score remaining14-7 Athens. Athens expanded its lead with another run by Fuller to make the score 21-7 with 8:43 to go in the third quarter. The next Pirate possession would prove unfavorable as well as Sir Charles Perkins would fumble the kickoff and the Hornets would pounce on the ball for therecovery. Athens would make the Pirates pay for the mishap and score on the first play of the drive on a deep pass to Fuller to build their lead to 27-7 with 8:32 left in the third quarter of play.
After going three-andout for the third time on the night, the Pirates fell victim to another Hornet touchdown run by Fuller. With 6:21 left in the third, Athens pushed their lead to 34-7. Not to go down without a fight, the Pirates reciprocated the
Hornets touchdown with one of their own by way of a Frezarian Harrison touchdown run. After the touchdown and failed two point try, Pittsburg found themselves trailing 34-13 with around two minutes left in the third quarter. Athens would add one more touchdown before the expiration of the third quarter and bump their lead to 40-13 over the Pirates.
