My Story

Melinda Mayben looked to family during cancer battle

It’s breast cancer awareness month, and there are many stories of survival out there, including one right here in Pittsburg. Melinda Mayben was diagnosed with breast cancer this past year and she can tell her story of survival as if it were yesterday. “Last September, a friend found a lump and she’d always gone to Baylor in Dallas for her screenings, so I thought, well I’m not going to send her by herself. She was fine and I got a callback. Two friends went with me and made a day of it,” said Mrs. Mayben. The hospital called Mrs. Mayben back once again and told her that she needed to come in for a biopsy.
“Paul and I went in for the biopsy and they said they would call me in the next three or four days with the results.”
Mrs. Mayben said that in that time-span, she was nervous and waiting for her results seemed to take forever, and then she got the call. “I got a call one day, and she told me right there while I was in my car that I had cancer, here I was, driving down the road and I’m all the sudden diagnosed with cancer. It wasn’t an easy way to find out.” As with many people when they receive a cancer diagnosis, Mrs. Mayben said her initial reaction was shock. “I was like oh my goodness; I’ve got to stop the car before I run over somebody. I came to the store and told Paul and he told me not to worry, that we can fight this together.” Mrs. Mayben said she faced some tough choices right off the bat.
“I had this lady on the phone asking me which doctor I wanted to use. I told her that I wasfrom little ol’ Pittsburg, Texas and she wantedt o know all of these answers. Luckily, I knew one, Sally Knox and I was told she was the best. Right after I told Paul about everything, the lady called me back with an appointment for the next day. That made me feel much better that they were going to be expeditious about it.”
