The Pirates officially got the monkey off their back last Friday night as they beat the Mount Vernon 41-6, and in doing so, secured their first win of the season. Both teams came in at 0-4 on the year, with each clawing and scratching their way through a tough pre-district schedule. Coming into this game, the Pirates made several changes in an effort to “restart” the team. Most notably, Pittsburgchanged their offensive play calling scheme to a huddle and giving the play call to the quarterback for him to relay to teammates in the huddle. The Pirates had been sending in plays by way of hand signals and sideline checks. Pittsburg also changed their defensive scheme from a 4-3 (four down lineman) to a 3-4, (three defensive lineman) which seemed to fit the Pirate personnel a lot better.
Sir Charles Perkins would be called upon for the quarterbacking duties for this game as Caleb Banks and Billy Kimble were unavailable. The Pirate offense wouldn’t miss a beat though as Perkins looked like a veteran signal caller instead of a first time starter at the position. After holding the Tigers to a fourth down punt, the Pirate offense would start their drive on the 18 yard line and zip right down the field. Perkins would take off on a quarterback keeper and be pulled down by the facemask which resulted in the Pirates being in the red zone early. Pittsburg would make the opportunity count when Teryian Cuba could dash into the end zone for a Pirate touchdown. The Pirates would add a 2-point conversion by way of a pass from Perkins to E.J. Hill who was waiting in the back of the end zone. After the conversion, it was 8-0 Pittsburg with 7:03 to go in the first.
Mount Vernon would stall on their second possession of the night thanks in part to Bradlee Warrick laying out Mount Vernon’s Kevi Evans for a 3-yard loss. After the Tiger punt, Pittsburg would regain possession at the 45 yard line. Perkins would receive the snap from the center and motor down the field on a 20-yard quarterback blast.
