The Homecoming revelry was in full force Friday night; there were mums galore, bells, whistles, garters, and every other thing imaginable on display. The Pirates were looking to notch their first win of the season when they met the Atlanta Rabbits on the gridiron.
The Pirates tried to start things off with a bang by attempting an onside kick to start the game and catch the Rabbits (Rabbs) napping, but the Rabbs came up with the recovery on the Pirate 45 yard line. Highly touted Atlanta quarterback, Chase Musgrove, came out to take command of the Rabb offense, but the Pirate defense stiffened and held them to a fourth down punt.
Billy Kimble came inas the signal caller for the Pirate offense and after a few good plays; the Pirates stalled out and were forced to punt the ball. On the ensuing punt, an Atlanta linebacker shot right through the gap and blocked Kimble’s punt which resulted in the Rabbs taking over on the six yard line. Within a play, the Rabbs punched in a touchdown, and converted the extra point to make it 7-0 Atlanta with 9:27 left in the first quarter. After Kimble, and receiver, Tyler Lafayette connected on a deep pass; the Pirates ran a halfback draw to set them up with a third-and-seven situation. After a 3-yard dash by Elijah Boyd, the Pirates found themselves facing a fourth-and-four, and elected to go for it. Kimble powered ahead on a quarterback keeper to pick up the first down for the Pirates, which set them up in the red zone. On the next play, Lafayette got the ball on a reverse and ran it in for a Pirate touchdown; they would fail to convert the 2-point try, making it 7-6 Atlanta.
