One Man’s Opinion by Roy Knox
As I sit around here “Father’s Day” morning recalling all the fun I had with my dad when I was young it is easy to believe I had the best dad ever, and he was, but there was more to it. I might have had the best family ever.
Almost all of my really great memories involved my whole family. Of course that was perfectly normal back in the old days. We did everything as a unit. We didn’t think it strange when all of us went on hunting and fishing trips together. Actually thinking about it, most all of our hunting and fishing trips were excuses for just cooking outside. The only time we were separated was when the kids were in school and my parents were at work.
I’m guessing these memories pretty much mirrors anyone else’s who is over 60. What I worry about is the young families today. Work is more stressful each day and there is huge demands on the parents to be away from the family. I only had one friend (or anyone else I knew) that lived in a single parent household back then. Nowadays, it is commonplace. Being parents to small children is a hard job, being a single parent is probably 10 times harder. I don’t mean to imply that children from a single parent home are less happy, less loved, or have less of a chance to be successful that their dual parent friends, but the additional stress on a single parent has to be obvious to their children. We set aside a day in May for mothers, and a day in June for fathers to be honored, when in reality, we should remember every day to be thankful for our families.
•I’m glad the Spurs won the championship, they deserved it. Don’t get too excited Spurs fans, if the Heat were ahead 3 to 1 I would’ve been rooting forthem.
•I dislike the Washington Redskins more than any other team in the National Football League, but I am proud that Daniel Snyder refuses to bend to the crybabies and change his team’s name. You white liberal do-gooders need to move on to another issue that is none of your business.
•Summertime means fresh fruit and veggies, having some today by the way.
•I hear that Facebook is going to allow pictures of women breastfeeding to be posted on walls. I don’t know what to think about this. I have always thought it (breastfeeding) was inappropriate only in two situations. The mother breastfeeding and driving down the road (has to be more dangerous than texting) and while participating in a wet T-shirt contest (not a team sport). Other than that I simply don’t care.
•We bought our three Labs new dog beds this weekend; Debbie just knew they would be excited about a new bed, not so much.
•I was reading a book about Ben Carson. If he runs for office I hope that can I vote for this man, the higher the office the better.
•I check the Dallas Cowboy website everyday in hope of some good news. It’s sad, I actually do.
•I wonder if Alaska has an illegal alien problem? Do Canadians sneak across the border?
•I think summer has finally arrived. I think we will see our first over 100 degree day before July.
•With the return of summer comes band practice, remember to hydrate, it is so hot out on the field. We expect near perfection, and the band always delivers.
