The Big Green Ballpark was packed last Thursday night as the Pirates took on districtrival North Lamar in Game 1 of a 2 Game series.

Game 1 got off to a rocky start for the Pirates, but they would battle back, something they’ve done all postseason and make it a close game. In the top of the first North Lamar’s Braydon Steed connected with the ball and was able to get on first with a single. That brought up Panther standout Daniel Gibbons to the plate. Pittsburg pitcher Garrett Truitt was able to work Gibbons to a full count, but later walked Gibbons to send him to first and advance Steed to second for the Panthers. Aaron Edwards laid down a sacrifice bunt for the Panthers that was fielded by Trace Burns for the first out of the inning for the Pirates. Braydon Steed advanced to third and Kyle Dunmon advanced to second on the sacrifice for North Lamar. Garrett Truitt came up big for the Pirates as he rung up Hunter Reeves and recorded the second out for Pittsburg in the inning. With two outs, Brandon Dusenberry came up to bat for North Lamar, on the third pitch of the at bat, Dusenberry hit a double out to the left field gap and Braydon Steed and Kyle Dunmon were able to cross the plate for the Panthers to make the score 2-0. Sam Cowling hit a shot to center which knocked in his teammate Brandon Dusenberry to put North Lamar up 3-0 on the Pirates. Pittsburg would get out of the inning when Trey Scudder was caught trying to steal second and was tagged out by Caleb Banks.

The Pirates and Panthers would battleback and forth for a few innings when Pittsburg would get on the board in the bottom of the third. Panther pitcher Daniel Gibbons threw four straight balls to Pittsburg’s Dalton Ernest to give him a free pass to first base. Cody Perry then came up to the plate for the Pirates and reached first on a sacrifice bunt and advanced Dalton Ernest to second. Ernest would then advance to third thanks to some quick thanking on his part and an error committed by North Lamar Pitcher Daniel Gibbons. Cody Perry stole second to set up the Pirates with a man on second and third with one out. Brandon “Bam Bam” Colbert came to the plate for Pittsburg and hit a hard grounder to the shortstop who muffed the ball and allowed Colbert to arrive safely at first. Dalton Earnest scored on the play for the Pirates and Cody Perry advanced to third and on to cross the plate which made the score 3-2 North Lamar.
