City to ban burning leaves, household trash

By Debbie A. Knox

Soon city residents may not be able to burn leaves or trash in the city limits. The city council held the first reading, of two, for a new city ordinance concerning outdoor burning. The ordinance prohibits burning leaves or trash in the city limits but residents can burn tree limbs, brush and plant material after obtaining a no-cost permit from the fire department.

“Citizens will not be able to burn leaves or household trash at all. However, we provide trash collection service; and with that service, residents can bag up to six bags of leaves, twice a week. Or citizens ca  mulch their leaves,” said City Manager Clint Hardeman. “An application, to burn tree limbs, brush and plant material can be filled out with the Pittsburg Fire Department. There is no cost for the permit; however, it must be in writing and approved.”

“The ordinance was written in accordance with the ‘Outdoor Burning Rule’ from the TexasCommission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) and will be enforced as such,” Mr. Hardeman said. “The application to burn will include: name, address, telephone number, a valid driver’s license and a description of items to be burned.” Fines up to $500 for each offense may be accessed to citizens who do not comply with the new ruling.

On a similar subject, the council voted to give six property owners 30- 90 days to clean up their properties or the city will impose a lien on the property if they have to demolish the structures. Those structures are: 422 Mount Pleasant St.; 212 Franklin St.; 203 Lyons St.; 418 Victory St., 401 Terry St.; and 506 Elm St.
