Big elections, Lady Pirate basketball top news in 2013

By Jeremy Weber

A pair of elections and a deep playoff run by the Lady Pirates produced the top news of 2013 in Pittsburg as voters passed a $10 million school bond in May and approved the sale of beer and wine within the city limits in November while the Lady Pirate basketball team advanced to the regional final before being knocked out of the playoffs.
Voters approved the issuance of $10 million in bonds to PISD in the May 4 election. The issue passed 605-258. Superintendent Judy Pollan said that the funds will provide facilities that will be used by Camp County children for many years to come. Among the projects already being funded by this bond include the construction of wrought iron fences in front of the primary school, security pipe rail fencing around the perimeter of the intermediate school, the extension of the canopies at both the primary and intermediate schools, adding another canopy to the Life Skills Building, and several projects that will be completed during the upcoming year.
The sale of beer and wine for off-premises sonsumption within the city limits was passed by a vote of 134-78 during a special election Nov. 5. A petition for the election was presented to the city in July.
The Lady Pirates basketball team set a new school record with 32 wins as they advanced to the regional final before losing to Krum, 41-28 Feb. 23. Pittsburg led at the half but could not hold on down the stretch as the Lady Pirates fell just short of a trip to the state tournament.
