Mail stolen from the outdoor receptacle at the Leesburg Post Office has led to the clearance of multiple cases of identity theft.
On Oct. 22, the Camp County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by a complainant from the Leesburg area who stated he had a check forged and used at Home Depot in Mount Pleasant. At the time it was unclear as to how the suspects gained access to the complainant’s identity, according to Sheriff Alan McCandless.
“Deputy Bo Tucker made contact with Home Depot in reference to obtaining any possible video evidence,” Sheriff McCandless said. “The Sheriff’s Office obtained a video from Home Depot depicting a white male and white female forging a check and purchasing approximately $800 worth of various types of plumbing and building materials.”
A week later, another victim in the Leesburg area reported that he had mailed a $100 donation check to the Highway 80 Mission in Longview. He had placed the check in his mailbox on State Highway 11. When he received his bank statement, the check had cleared the bank and had been written for approximately $2,700. The check had been cashed at Wal-Mart in Mount Pleasant and was used to purchase two large flat-screen televisions and other electronics.
