The city council approved a proposal for a four-cent tax hike, five cents under the effective rollback, at a budget meeting on Aug. 5.
“We’re really going down four cents from the effective rate,” said Mr. Hardeman. “The effective tax rate of $0.569403 which the camp county appraisal district referenced in a public notice would have been required to generate the same level of tax revenue as the current fiscal year.
“But, we’re not going to go up that much. We’re down four cents from the effective rate.”
The city will set the rate at $0.528488 per $100 valuation.
The city reviewed the contract the Economic Development Corporation brought in to buy two adjoining properties to property they own. Mr. Hardeman said they want to buy the properties to help sell the other property.
“They are buying a piece of property at 140 Quitman and 109 Marshall as incentive to develop the property,” he said.
The city’s next council meeting it Aug. 19 at 6 p.m. Their final meeting for August is Aug. 26, at 6 p.m.
