Last semester Pittsburg High School senior Ty Hammonds found the sweet spot balancing school work and working out on the field.
Hammonds, who was named to the 2012 All-Sate Academic Football Team, said “it wasn’t really an option,” to not study.
“I just had to juggle it around and get it done,” he said.
Currently ranked as the valedictorian of the class of 2013, Hammonds said he has applied and been accepted to Baylor, Harding University in Arkansas, University of Texas, and Southern Methodist University, among others. He said he has also applied to Harvard University and Rice University, but has not heard back from them yet.
“I hope to find out at the end of the month,” Hammonds said.
The wide receiver’s athletic record for the year ended with “eight or nine receptions for 150 yards,” he said.
“It wasn’t as good as my junior year,” Hammonds said.
Rice University officials told him they are full on recruits, but if someone switches schools, they would call. Southern Methodist told Hammonds that he could try for a walk-on tryout. Despite these offers, and his work on the football field, Hammonds said he probably wouldn’t play football at college.
“I don’t think so, because I want to go to grad school sooner,” he said.
Hammonds said he plans on being a pharmacist. He is the son of Angela Hammonds and Jason Hammonds, both of Pittsburg.
