Pirates begin District baseball season on March 22

The Pittsburg Pirates’ varsity boys’ baseball season will begin District play March 22 at home against North Lamar.
“I’m really excited about seeing all these guys play; we have a real good group” Head Coach Brad Bohannon said.
Many of the athletes included in this group have been playing baseball together since they were in little league.
“A lot of us played for the Game Cocks when we were younger,” senior Caleb Massey said.
The Game Cocks were a fall-ball select team many team members used to play for, according to Pirate senior Shawn Albright.
“We would play other select teams from around the area,” he said.
Coach Bohannon said he is excited about the season.
“We have some guys that have done some great things already in the past such as Zack DeLuna, Shawn Albright, Brian Taylor, Brandon Colbert and Garrett Truitt,” Coach Bohannon said. “I expect a lot out of these particular guys and am excited about seeing what they can do.”
Bohannon, born and raised a coach’s son, worked under his dad, Tommy Bohannon for five years at New Waverly High School. The father/son duo had great success with four top 10 finishes and trips to the Regional Semi-Finals and Finals in consecutive years. Coach Bohannon played at both New Mexico Junior College and Armstrong Atlantic State University.
“I love what I am doing and have been very blessed in the game of baseball. I also played one year professionally for the Chillicothe Paints, an independent team in the Frontier League,” he said.
The Pirates finished 12-12 last year, but the players and coaches are optimistic about the upcoming season.
“I believe with the talent we have and the pitching we possess that we can have a very good year,” Coach Bohannon said.
The Pirates will compete in the Hallsville tournament March 7-9, and on March 11 will host the Mount Pleasant Tigers at 11 a.m.
The District opener against North Lamar will be played in Pittsburg at 7 p.m.
